What Is Lye?
If you've ever looked at the ingredients on a traditional soap, you've probably noticed something that sounds alarming: lye.
Many people assume that means finished soap contains a harsh chemical. In reality, lye is an essential ingredient used to make soap—not something that remains in a properly made bar.
Where Did Lye Come From?
Lye is a strong alkali. Today, soap makers typically use sodium hydroxide to make solid bar soap and potassium hydroxide to make liquid soap.
On its own, lye is highly caustic and must be handled with care. But soap making doesn't stop with lye by itself. It begins a chemical reaction.
Where Did Lye Come From?
Long before modern chemistry, people discovered that water filtered through the ashes of burned plants could produce an alkaline solution that could be used for making soap. Different cultures relied on different plants depending on what was available locally—from hardwoods to salt-loving coastal plants and other regional vegetation.
Today, soap makers use purified sodium hydroxide instead. It is chemically consistent and allows soap makers to produce reliable, high-quality soap every time.
The Chemistry of Soap
When lye is combined with oils and water, a process called saponification begins.
During this reaction, the oils and the lye are transformed into something entirely new: soap and naturally occurring glycerin.
Once saponification is complete, the lye has been used up in the reaction. A properly made bar of soap does not contain free lye.
That's why finished soap can safely be used to wash your hands, face, body, dishes, clothing, and much more.
Why Does Lye Still Appear on Ingredient Lists?
Some traditional soap makers list the original ingredients that were used to make the soap, including sodium hydroxide.
Others list only the finished soap ingredients.
Both approaches are common and can be accurate—they simply describe the soap from different points in the manufacturing process.
Could Soap Contain Lye?
A properly made soap should not contain excess free lye.
Reputable soap makers carefully measure their ingredients and allow the soap to fully complete the saponification process before it is sold.
Traditional soap making has been refined over centuries, and experienced makers know how to produce bars that are both effective and gentle.
Why This Matters
Understanding the role of lye helps explain why traditional soaps can have such short ingredient lists.
The oils provide the character of the soap, while lye makes the chemical transformation possible. Without lye, oils would remain oils—they would never become soap.
In other words, every true soap begins with lye, but a properly made bar ends as soap.

The word saponification comes from the Latin word sapo, meaning soap. Every true soap—from Aleppo and Marseille to Nablus and Greek olive oil soap—is created through this same process. While the oils may vary from one tradition to another, the chemistry that transforms them into soap is the same.
